Clothing and Fashion Wholesale Market Overview

The UK fashion and textile industry’s value has significantly increased to £62 billion, indicating substantial growth from previous years. This sector now supports 1.3 million jobs, highlighting its crucial role in the UK’s economy. This update reflects the industry’s dynamic evolution and its increasing importance to both the national economy and employment

The UK’s independent clothing retailers find themselves in an enviable position within a robust fashion industry, buoyed by a vibrant ecosystem of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). With the UK being the third largest apparel and footwear market globally, consumer expenditure on fashion is significant, with Brits spending nearly £45 billion on clothing and textiles. This spending trend, coupled with the presence of over 34,000 businesses operating within the fashion and textile sector as of 2020, underscores a thriving market environment. Independent retailers, in particular, appear to benefit from this dynamic, reflecting a strong consumer interest in unique, boutique-style shopping experiences that differ from the offerings of industry behemoths. This positive outlook for independent shops indicates a broader consumer shift towards personalised and niche market offerings, underpinning the sector’s resilience and growth potential.

Online sales have also been growing at their slowest rate in over a year, indicating more people are heading to their local high street rather than logging on to buy new clothing items – whether jeans, footwear, schoolwear or sportswear.

However, the recent and uncharacteristically warm weather has shown that the largest retailers and the small independent clothing outlets rely on people needing to change their wardrobes according to the season. And given that we’re enjoying temperatures of 20 degrees towards the end of October, the usual rush for winter wear – coats, thick jumpers, knitwear etc. – has not happened. In a reverse of the usual situation, UK clothing retailers are anxiously awaiting the arrival of winter and its harsher weather.

The UK clothing industry’s trade show scene is vibrant and busy. Chief amongst these are Pure London which describes itself as the definitive fashion trade show and takes place at London Olympia in February, and MODA at the NEC in Birmingham in February and August each year. Retailers looking for more cutting-edge clothing and fashion can visit the LondonEdge shows held twice yearly in February and September. Drapers magazine contains the latest fashion and retail news and the latest fashion trends as well as international catwalk coverage.
