Playing and Toys Market Overview
The UK toys and games industry is finally perking up: in 2013, for the first time in a rocky four years, it posted growth. The recession and the decreased popularity of games consoles perceived to be out of date meant sales slumped from 2009-2012, but last year a splurge of new products – particularly from Sony and Microsoft - and a particularly strong performance by the video game industry provided a much-needed boost to the flagging industry. Good news for toy and games retailers in the UK, who will be hoping that the curve continues upwards.
And there is, indeed, good reason to believe it will – at least for a couple of sectors within the industry. In the traditional toys and games sector, forthcoming products from Star Wars and LEGO are expected to be robust drivers of growth, and the release of new consoles is expected to bode well for the video games space.
There’s much more to this vibrant and colourful industry, however, than computer games and games consoles, hugely popular though they are. At The Wholesaler UK, we have a diverse range of different types of toys and games available for your shelves – from character toys such as Batman, Barbie and The Very Hungry Caterpillar, to products for the kid in everyone, like Mini Moto Dirt Bikes and Mini Moto Quads. You’ll also find here a fantastic array of craft toys, wooden toys, dolls and educational toys – and much more besides.
For retailers of more traditional toys and games, the future does contain challenges. Rumours abound that the massive surge in popularity of electronic means of entertainment over recent years gravely threaten more traditional means – but last year’s sales seem to suggest that’s not so. We hope our exciting range of products in this sector will give retailers all they need to thrive in this intensely competitive space.
The Toy Fair, held at Olympia Grand and West Halls every year during the last week in January, is the UK’s only dedicated toy, game and hobby trade show where an impressive array of wholesalers exhibit and are on hand to give advice to retailers. The trade association for this sector is, unsurprisingly, the Toy Retailers Association whilst Equitoy is the trade association for toy importers into the UK.
