Mother and Baby Market Overview
The UK mother and baby product market continues to be dominated by a large number of small, independent retailers – along with just a handful of larger retailers such as Mothercare and Boots – that sell into specific niche areas. However, these smaller retailers will be well aware that, according to the Office for National Statistics, live births were down 4.3% in 2013 – the biggest drop since 1975: clearly, then, with a slightly reduced marketplace, there is no room to rest on one’s laurels for those in the baby product business.
Despite 2013’s reduced birth rate in the UK, one headline-grabbing event became something of a sales bonanza for the babywear industry: the birth of Prince George. The little Prince’s arrival in July 2013 sparked a staggering 400% increase in sales of woollen baby clothes –‘He’s the Prince of Sales!’ was the headline under which The Daily Mail ran the story – with retailers reporting a particular demand for romper suits and baby cardigans in traditional cotton and wool fabrics.
As the now-15 month-old Prince progresses through his early years under the world’s spotlight, market experts say such consumer trends are likely to continue. The UK’s mother and baby product retailers, therefore, will be paying close attention to what this unwitting ambassador for babywear is sporting.
