New Enterprise Allowance launched
The New Enterprise Allowance (NEA) has been fully launched today. Similar to the Enterprise Allowance of the 1980s the scheme will give extra help to the unemployed who want to start their own business.
Those eligible will have been claiming Jobseekers Allowance for 26 weeks or more, will receive £65 a week for the first 13 weeks and £33 a week for the next 13 weeks. Low cost business startup loans of up to £1000 will also be available.
Volunteer business mentors will be available to guide participants through the planning and the early stages of trading. Those wishing to claim the NEA will have to demonstrate that they have a viable business plan.
David Cameron has stated that he hopes this programme will help establish up to 40,000 new enterprises by 2013.
The NEA Scheme is administered by the Department for Work and Pensions. More information will be available from your local Job Centre Plus office.
