Will an independent retailer move into vacant Preston premises?

An opportunity has presented itself to local retailers in Lancashire thanks to an empty unit in a city centre building.

D&A, a London-based property company, has bought new premises in Preston city centre. While it ideally wants a big name to fill the space, it would like to find a short-term tenant until a permanent one can be found, the Lancashire Evening Post reports.

Surveyor Anthony Ratcliffe, who is working on D&A's behalf, said that a number of retailers have expressed interest in taking on a temporary lease.

"We believe it is the best spot on the high street and there is interest in it, but obviously the market remains difficult at the moment," he told the newspaper.

Mr Ratcliffe went on to say the Preston's retail sector "seems to be picking up nicely" in the wake of the recession, which could spell good news for local independent retailers.

Elsewhere, the Morpeth Herald reports that retailers have started purchasing leases at the new Sanderson Arcade development, the site of the old Morpeth Comrades Club.
