Will Wick shoppers be attracted to retailer's expansion?

An independent retailer in Wick is hoping to attract new trade to the town's high street by branching out into a new sector.

Morag Mackenzie, who owns and manages Morag's Cafe, will open Morag's Gift Shop next Monday (July 26th) in a bid to lure more shoppers to the town centre, the John O'Groat Journal reports.

The expansion, which is being implemented with the help of Ms Mackenzie's partner Andrew Bacon, will involve the creation of one new job.

Speaking to the newspaper, Ms Mackenzie explained she wanted to fight the "apathy" among Wick's shoppers.

"We are trying our hardest to get trade back on this end of the street," she commented.

"People seem to have given up, they seem quite dispirited."

It is expected that Morag's gift shop will stock items including handbags, picture frames, greetings cards and jewellery.

Wick is home to a number of independent retailers including McAllan's clothing store, Made in Caithness gifts shop and The Reel Thing haberdashery.
