Chorlton's independent retail sector expected to grow

The independent retailer sector in Chorlton looks set to receive a boost under proposals to improve its shopping arcade.

Plans to improve Chorlton Shopping Precinct, which is located south-west of Manchester city centre, are due to be submitted by Citybranch before the end of the year, Manchester Confidential reports.

A report handed to Manchester City Council's executive said the plans involve "supporting the growth of the independent retail sector" in addition to creating a better shopping environment.

"Discussions with Citybranch indicate that they will be able to consult with the public on their proposals in autumn 2010 leading to a planning application by the end of 2010," the news provider quoted the report as saying.

The council and Citybranch have been working alongside leading consultancy forms to draw up the proposals for Chorlton town centre, and a "distinctive independent retail sector" is something they are keen on developing.

The Keep Chorlton Interesting campaign has also lent its backing to the support and growth of the town's independent businesses, which it believes can be achieved limiting the expansion of supermarkets and chain stores.
