Lancashire man fined for selling fake designer clothes on eBay
A businessman from Lancashire has been fined £500 after being caught selling fake designer clothes on an internet auction site.
Andrew Walker's home was raided by Trading Standards officers after the Ted Baker label complained that counterfeit items from its clothing range were being auctioned on eBay, the Manchester Evening News reports.
It is believed that Mr Walker's illegal operations have cost genuine traders and manufacturers approximately £80,000. During an appearance at Burnley Crown Court, he admitted four counts of using a trademark without authorisation.
In addition to his fine, Mr Walker was ordered to pay £1,500 costs.
The defendant claimed he believed the clothes he was selling were genuine and that he was keen to make some cash after running into debt problems totalling around £60,000.
Three other people were involved in the scheme, all of whom received the same fine.
Earlier this year, Paul Barratt became the first person to be convicted for shill bidding on eBay - an activity that involves sellers bidding on their own auctions from other accounts.
