New Tesco store in Whitby could 'impact' local retailers

Independent shops in Whitby, North Yorkshire could be negatively impacted if a major new supermarket development gets underway.

This is the warning of Robert Goodwill, the Conservative MP for Whitby and Scarborough, who said that his Whitby constituents are concerned about the implications that a new Tesco store may have, the Yorkshire Post reports.

Scarborough Council is due to decide whether a new Tesco or Sainsbury's can be built in the town, while a third option involves extending the existing Co-op store.

"We need to be very careful to preserve the character of Whitby, and be aware of the impact that a major supermarket could have on the town," Mr Goodwill told the newspaper.

"While a new supermarket will bring jobs to Whitby, there is also the impact it will have on the town's independent retailers that needs to be considered."

Elsewhere, the Telegraph & Argus reports that Sainsbury's is hoping to open a new supermarket in Bingley, while Tesco has expressed a similar intention.
