Chancellor urged to support local retail
Alistair Darling must ensure that his upcoming Budget provides support for local retailers so that they can continue to serve their communities and contribute to the economy.
That is the central message of a new letter sent to the chancellor of the exchequer by the Association for Convenience Stores (ACS), which outlined the steps that must be taken to protect stores from the threat of closure.
The group called for the Budget, which is due to be published later this month, to include an increase in the thresholds for small business rates relief so that more small shops can benefit.
Furthermore, it urged Mr Darling to resist "political influences" in setting the National Minimum Wage, and insisted he reconsider the increase in National Insurance contributions, which the ASC labelled a tax on jobs.
James Lowman, chief executive of the organisation, said: "Local shops can survive the recession but need support to succeed.
“The chancellor needs to support local shops further to absorb the increases in the 2010 business rates revaluation, which has resulted in unfair increases for many of our members."
The 2010 Budget will be unveiled on March 24th.
