Loss of independent retailers is 'weakening communities'
'Retail behemoths' are having a negative impact on Britain's communities by causing independents to close, it has been claimed.
That is according to an article in the Scotsman, which suggests that small retailers are suffering at the hands of supermarket developments.
Further to this, concern is also voiced on the impact such losses will have on various communities, with the disappearance of shops that have been around for decades having a greater impact than people might think.
The paper calls on those in power to keep independent stores and their community in mind when making decisions on superstore developments.
It said: "Councils should remember [small shops'] plight when considering supermarket planning applications. Every time a local shop shuts, the community it serves gets that little bit weaker."
However, it was also suggested those with the ultimate power were the consumers, who now prefer to shop under one roof than support a collection of local stores.
Crolla's, a shop in Newhaven, Scotland, is to close later this month after 115 years in business, despite having won the Best Local Shop category in the Evening News Community Awards.
