Petition over Portobello Market evictions

Thousands of people have signed a petition in support of the 150 independent retailers evicted from Portobello Market.

Widespread consumer dissatisfaction arose as a result of the independents being replaced by a chain store, with a total of 34,000 signing the document, according to the BBC.

Disgruntled antique shop owners insist they were promised a return to Likpa Arcade once it had been refurbished.

However, the developer has merged the site into one vast shop, occupied by fashion outlet All Saints. Old retailers feel they have been misled and that the refurbishment does not fit with the area's small store vibe.

Marion Gettleson, who has run an antiques shop in the market for 50 years, told the news provider: "When [the] scaffolding was removed there was a massive, 10,000-square-foot All Saints in place of the stalls.

"It is so utterly out of character with the neighbourhood it's breathtaking."

The petition consists of 7,500 hardcopy signatures and 26,000 supporters on Facebook.
