Retailers see upturn in sales of Fairtrade products
UK-based retailers saw sales for Fairtrade products increase over the past year, it has been revealed.
Figures from the Fairtrade Foundation reveal that Fairtrade product sales rose by 12 per cent in 2009 to $1.2 billion (£800 million).
Harriet Lamb, chief executive of the Fairtrade Foundation, revealed that while the impact of the recession had impacted consumers' spending habits, people remained conscious of trade ethics and supported the Fairtrade system.
She said: "2009 was a tough year for everyone. It is to the credit of the British and Irish public that, despite the recession, they are still voting with their wallets for fairness and want to change the indignities of an unjust trading system."
Ms Lamb went on to say that during the current Fairtrade Fortnight, which runs from February 22nd to March 7th, the foundation was attempting to convince two million people to regularly buy Fairtrade goods.
