Retailers experience sales growth in February

UK retailers posted their strongest sales growth in two years, it has been revealed.

According to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), Britain's high streets bounced back from what was largely a poor January, surpassing expectations of a flat February with good sales.

Its latest Distributive Trades Survey reveals that 46 per cent of retailers said sales volumes in early February were up on the corresponding period for 2009, while 23 per cent said they were lower.

The balance of +23 per cent is a marked improvement on January's - 8 per cent.

However, Andy Clarke, chairman of the CBI Distributive Trades Panel, said that the long-term expectation for sales was not as strong as the short-term figures might have suggested.

He said: "Retailers don't think February’s growth spurt will be matched in March, but the sector can take some reassurance that job losses are easing off and capital expenditure plans are stabilising.

"While retailers see some growth ahead, the road to recovery through 2010 is likely to be fragile."
