Isle of Man Tesco could 'impact' independent retailers

The proposed development of a new Tesco superstore on the Isle of Man could impact local businesses, it has been revealed.

John Francis, a chartered town planner who appeared as a witness for the chain store at its planning inquiry, admitted that the creation of the supermarket could have knock-on effects for smaller stores, according to iomtoday.co.im.

He told the news provider: "There are some potential impacts for independent retailers but it will depend on the quality of the offer they provide."

The proposed new store has been the subject of fierce debate on the island, with objectors suggesting that a large Tesco could spell the end for a number of local traders.

However, Mr Francis says that the good recent performances seen by stores in Douglas would possibly allow a number of stores to survive the arrival of the larger competitor.

A report by Tesco reveals that the construction of the superstore would take away £10.1 million from retailers by 2014, the equivalent of 6.9 per cent of trade.
