Oxfordshire retailers come together to encourage local trade

Independent retailers from across Oxfordshire are coming together in an attempt to stop the rot that is leading to a number of store closures across the county.

According to the Banbury Cake, shoppers and councils are being urged to do their part to prevent more of Britain's independent shops from going out of business.

Two video and games stores have recently been forced to close their doors, along with a specialist retailer providing a range of goods from Brazil.

Independent music and book shops have also found the past few months incredibly difficult, according to the news provider.

However, it is hoped a new 'Use It or Lose It' campaign will encourage more shoppers to stay local and curb the 2,000 independent store closures occurring each year.

Shop owner Jon Spira told the publication: "Customers definitely need to support their independents because otherwise they will close.

"The government does not seem to realise that we are selling out to the big multinational chains, who are syphoning money out of communities."

In what has been a difficult time for retailers, the plight of many local stores was made all the worse by a slow start to sales in 2010, with figures from the Confederation of British Industry revealing a 36 per cent year-on-year drop in sales to early January.
