Britons are biggest online shoppers in Europe
Britain spent more money online last year than any other European country, it has been revealed.
According to a survey from the Centre for Retail Research, British shoppers spent £38 billion online during 2009, the equivalent to £1,102 per consumer.
The research also shows that UK internet sales accounted for almost a third of all online sales across the continent and ten per cent of all retail sales in Britain.
Bruce Fair, managing director of online shopping and price comparison site Kelkoo, which commissioned the research, said that the success of the online retail sector was of little surprise given the money that consumers can save.
He said: "In these hard times, it is no surprise that shoppers are turning to the internet rather than the High Street, especially when you consider that purchasing items online can result in savings of 20% or more."
He went on to say that over the coming year online retail sales will take up a "significant share" of total retail trade in the country.
