Online card company to change the face of the industry?

An online greetings card company is having an impact on the industry, as well as drawing attention to the business opportunity in online retail.

Whamoosh!, which launched only last October, uses face-recognition technology to supplant people's faces into comical images and pictures, according to Business Desk.

The new technology is drawing attention to the fact that the card industry has a relatively small online presence, despite the success of stores such as MoonPig.com.

John Bickley, co-founder of Whamoosh! told the news provider: "It's a traditional, mature market. Up until MoonPig.com the internet had by-passed the industry, but that created a market for personalisation.

"Online is only about 1.5 per cent of the total market at the moment so there are lots of opportunities for personalisation to take a much bigger share."

With innovative products such as Mr Bickley's, that share looks set to rise relatively soon.

Indeed, Mr Bickley and his co-founder Alan Oliver are looking for an equity investment of up to £500,000 as they plan their company's acquisition by a traditional card retailer.
