Retail apprenticeships hit record high

The number of people entering into retail apprenticeships has increased to its highest level, new figures reveal.

Data from the Sector Skills Council shows that a total of 5,900 retail apprenticeships were awarded in England for the 2008/09 academic year, rising 31 per cent on the previous year's figures of 4,500, according to Skillsmart Retail.

Anne Seaman, chief executive of Skillsmart Retail, said that such schemes were an efficient way of integrating new workers into the retail environment.

She said: "Retailers regularly tell us that apprenticeships work for them as they allow their staff to learn on the job while getting the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to excel."

Ms Seaman made her comments ahead of Apprenticeship Week, which is due to run from February 1st to 5th.

Support for the benefits brought by apprenticeships has also come from Theo Paphitis, chairman of stationery specialists Ryman and Skillsmart Retail patron, who says that they are "good for business", according to is4profit.com.
