Retailers lose money with unmemorable domain names

Many of the UK's smaller retailers could be putting sales volumes at risk by trading under an unmemorable domain name, it has been revealed.

That is according to research by Streamline.net, which reveals 20 per cent of Britons struggle to remember website names that are unusual or overcomplicated, reports Internet Retailing.

As such, retailers who do not ensure the website under which they trade is as simple and memorable as possible could be putting themselves out of pocket.

Steve Holford, marketing director at Streamline.net, said: "The data suggests that many small businesses undervalue the effect their web address can have on their consumers' behaviour.

"There is a real danger their work and investment on the web can be undermined by the simple fact that consumers cannot remember their URL."

However, businesses appear to be doing little about the problem, with only three per cent planning to make changes to their domain name. This is despite the fact that 34 per cent are dissatisfied with the level of web-based sales.
