Pressures on small retailers 'must be recognised'

A district councillor for the St Albans area has highlighted the dangers of business rate hikes on small retailers.

Councillor Roma Mills, the Labour leader for the locale, has suggested that rises in business rates could have a damaging effect on retailers still struggling to cope with the fallout of the recession, according to the St Albans and Harpenden Review.

She told the news provider: "We need to recognise the pressures on our small retailers across the district.

"I would hope that in the current economic climate we would be trying to support our local traders and that we would realise the pressures that are on them."

Councillor Mills went on to say that consideration over the future of small retailers should be taken into account by those who implement the area's business rates.

St Albans recently played host to a Retailer of the Year project whereby support and recognition were given to local stores in order to encourage a rise in footfall.
