Independent retailers given online boost

Independent retailers in Hampshire have been offered support from their local council in the form of increased online presence.

A new website, shopinhampshire.co.uk, has been set up to help small retailers cope with the financial constraints suffered as a result of the recession.

The website allows local retailers to create an online presence and target customers via the web, helping to combat the reduction in spending and footfall on the county's high streets.

So far, 8,000 stores have signed up to the website, with many more likely to join if the initiative proves successful.

Councillor Jonathan Glen, Hampshire County Council executive member for economic development, said that the webpage was one of a number of programmes aimed at aiding the retail sector and the people employed within it.

He said: "The retail sector has been particularly badly hit by the recession. It is important that we support Hampshire’s independent retailers.

"Addressing unemployment is also a priority [so we are] holding IT training sessions in partnership with Job Centre Plus."
