London retailers enjoy best December for 7 years

London-based retailers experienced their best December sales for nearly a decade, it has been revealed.

According to figures from the British Retail Consortium and KPMG, retailers based in London saw sales rise to a seven-year high.

Monthly sales were 12 per cent higher than the previous year on a like-for-like basis, when sales reduced by 0.7 per cent as a result of a recession-induced fall in consumer confidence.

While these are the best sales results experienced since the survey began in 2002, it may well be the case that sales have also out-done previous years' figures.

Surprisingly, retail footfall fell to its lowest level since September. This has been blamed on the cold weather as well as a reduction in the number of discounts on offer.

However, the wintry weather did have a positive impact on clothing and footwear sales. This success was further buoyed by gift-buying during the Christmas period.

Many retailers might expect for sales success to continue throughout January as shoppers look to make the most of post-Christmas offers.
