Small retailers victorious during cold snap

Small retailers claimed a victory over their larger counterparts during the recent cold weather, with people choosing to shop locally rather than risk a car journey.

It is estimated that the public's wariness of using a car over the past couple of weeks has led to small retailers claiming £750 million worth of sales as people opted for their local shops rather than the out-of-town supermarket, according to the Scotsman.

The Federation of Small Businesses said that people should not make the mistake of only using smaller, local shops in times of bad weather, and instead use them on a regular basis.

A spokesperson told the news provider: "It's fair to say that many people have rediscovered their local shops during the cold snap.

"What is important though is that people should continue to use these shops. If they don't, then come the next emergency or spell of bad weather, it could be that these shops won't be there."

It is believed Tesco alone lost £250 million.
