Niche retailers see huge rise in sales

Pet retailers have experienced a huge increase in particular products as a result of the weather, it has been claimed.

Sales of dog coats have risen by a massive 70 per cent as owners look to shield their pets from what has been an unusually frigid period, according to Pets at Home.

It is further revealed that other warming pet products have proven popular over recent weeks, with sales of items such as rabbit hutches also rising.

Overall sales at the retailer were up by 6.7 per cent on a like-for-like basis, and while the figures relate to a single company, the trend will have likely carried through to a number of stores in the sector.

Matt Davies, chief executive of the pet store, said: "Our performance has been very strong all year and I am pleased that despite the bad weather we were also able to deliver a good sales performance over the Christmas period."

Pets at Home also operates a selection of veterinary surgeries.
