Charity shop popularity harming local retailers?

A number of charity shops are struggling to keep up stock levels amid a recession-related boom in sales.

That is according to The Press and Journal, which reveals that as a result of an increase in demand for cheap charity shop merchandise, cash-strapped consumers are emptying stores.

The evident popularity of charity shops in the current economic climate could have an impact on the profit margins of other local retailers, which in many smaller towns share a difficult relationship as it is.

Madonna Maguire, shop manager at Highland Hospice in Inverness, said that the charity chain had been doing particularly well of late and hoped the future would herald similar success.

She told the news provider: "All of our shops throughout the Highlands have been doing particularly well lately and we, therefore, would like to see this trend continue."

Shelter, the charity for homeless people, also revealed that sales had risen during the recession.
