Online retailers enjoy profitable 2009

Britain's online retailers enjoyed a hugely successful 2009, with sales increasing sharply.

That is according to Retail Decisions, a card fraud prevention firm, which reveals that web sales in the UK have risen by 21 per cent on 2008 levels.

Furthermore, it is estimated that total internet sales reached £49.8 billion last year.

The increase in online trade could have a detrimental impact on the UK's small retail outlets that have yet to establish an internet presence.

Steve Makin, finance director of Shop Direct, which owns several online retail stores, said that sales were expected to continue to grow, but would not reach anticipated levels for some time yet.

He said: "We're on track to [make a pre-tax profit], but certainly we feel we're several years away from getting to the levels that we think the business should be generating."

According to Retail Decisions, 30 per cent of all 2009 retail sales took place in November and December.
