Garden sector retailers enjoy merry Christmas
UK-based retailers in the gardening industry have enjoyed a successful Christmas period, it has been revealed.
According to the Horticultural Trades Association's (HTA's) Retail Management Group, its members reported excellent sales despite the widespread cold weather and fears that the recession could impact sales.
Philip Evason, from Haskins Garden Centres and chair of the HTA's Retail Management Group said that the festive period continued where the rest of the year had left off.
He said: "The increase in footfall we experienced during the year continued through the month of December with sales in the first 3 weeks notably strong."
Mr Evason's comments were supported by Iain Wylie from Grosvenor Garden Centre in Chester, who suggested that the sector need not have worried ahead of the busy retail period, for the centre went on to beat the record sales experienced in 2008.
He said that despite the "uncertainty" ahead of the Christmas trading season, sales "both matched our earlier seasons' success and it was far better than 2008."
