Yorkshire retailers protest supermarket move
The owners of a group of independent retailers from a village in Yorkshire have warned that a new supermarket could severely impact the area.
According to a report in the South Yorkshire Times, supermarket chain Netto is set to open a new store on the outskirts of Denaby at the end of the month.
It will mean that the small local Netto shop in the village's Grays Court shopping area will be closed down.
Local retailers told the paper that they were concerned that the move would drive trade away from the village's centre.
Independent newsagent owner Brian Thomas explained to the paper: "We have had this problem before. If we don't have another store here it will kill trade here. It will be especially hard on pensioners who will find it difficult to get to the new Netto."
However, the supermarket itself stressed that the move was good news for the local area.
"This new Netto supermarket represents a significant retail investment for the people of Denaby, Conisbrough and Mexborough," spokesperson Richard Lancaster told the publication.
