Workplace stress 'hits small businesses hard'
While small businesses are better at helping their staff cope with workplace stress, more still needs to be done to help bosses deal with the problem.
The Forum of Private Business (FPB) highlighted recent research from HSA that showed that 47 per cent of UK businesses believe workplace stress is a key cause of sickness in their organisation.
Interestingly, the research showed that larger firms and public sector organisations were far more affected by stress than smaller retailers and other businesses.
Despite this, the FPB's senior member services representative, Philip Moody, said that smaller companies were seriously affected by stress-related absence.
"Losing key members of staff is felt more acutely by the owners of small businesses, and in turn, this causes them to suffer from stress. It is important to ensure that stress-related health issues are dealt with correctly," he explained.
HSA spokesperson Glenn Rhodes added: "Stress has increasingly become an issue for organisations. Despite this, many seem to be burying their heads in the sand over the problem."
