Wholesalers looking for insight from independent retailers

UK wholesalers and suppliers are left "very much in the dark" when it comes to assessing the success of different products at the tills in the independent retail sector.

That is according to SalesOut, a provider of "actionable insight" for retailers and wholesalers, which claimed that suppliers are now capturing and sharing information about shipments to independent stores in order to see where opportunities may lie.

Writing on the website mycustomer.com, company chief executive Marcus Vallance said that this customer intelligence allows wholesale suppliers and brands to take a more rounded view of what is and isn't selling across different sectors in the independent market.

He warned that the recession is having a major transforming effect on consumer shopping habits, meaning that it is dangerous for small and independent retailers to assume that they will see the same trends being witnessed by larger chains.

"The availability of real statistics and their interpretation into actionable insights offers brand suppliers and wholesalers a powerful tool as it allows them to accurately analyse the independent sector," Mr Vallance added.

Earlier this month, the Forum for Private Business suggested that delays by retailers in payments to their suppliers are leaving many wholesalers facing undue financial pressure in the current economic climate.
