US firm gets tough on eBay counterfeiters
A US manufacturer of baseball caps has revealed that it now has to carefully monitor online auction site eBay to prevent counterfeit goods from being sold.
In an interview with the Buffalo Business First newspaper, New Era Cap explained that up to three members of staff now regularly checked on eBay to try to prevent fake hats from going on sale.
The company's corporate counsel, Lorrie Turner, explained to the newspaper that between 2,000 and 4,000 fake caps went on sale on eBay every week in the US, Canada, the UK and other European and Asian countries.
He added: "At one point in time we were shutting down 6,000 individual eBay auctions a week featuring counterfeit caps, imitation caps or auctions using our trademarks, even though they were not New Era caps."
As a result of the problem, the firm appointed Tony Swaffield as its director of brand protection.
In this role, Mr Swaffield has worked to create a legal infrastructure in the countries where the fake caps are manufactured. According to the report, the firm how has to spend over £750,000 targeting counterfeiters.
Recently, two men from Wales appeared in court in the UK charged with selling counterfeit Lacoste and Abercrombie and Fitch jackets on eBay.
