UK's smallest town protests supermarket plan
Residents in the country's smallest town have protested plans to build a supermarket in the area.
The local East Anglian Daily Times reported that residents from Manningtree - which has a population of just 900 - gathered on Saturday (August 9th) at the proposed site of the new Tesco shop to protest its construction.
A total of 350 people joined hands and formed a human chain to show the size of the supermarket.
They warned that the new supermarket would be disastrous for the area's independent retailers.
Michael Coultharde-Steer, chairman of Stour Community First, commented: "If [the building of the supermarket] goes ahead we believe the impact will be catastrophic and lead to an irreversible and fundamental change to the town.
"Shops that already exist in Manningtree will in all probability close down and the effect of traffic congestion on what is already a quite busy road will lead to gridlock around the town."
Recently, retailers in Milton Keynes launched a protest against a new supermarket development.
