UK businesses threatened by rising levels of fraud
New research has suggested that small businesses in the UK are increasingly falling victim to fraud.
The BDO Stoy Hayward FraudTrack report indicated that fraud cost UK businesses over £705 million in the last six months, up 74 per cent on the same period in 2007.
Worryingly, the research found that businesses were most likely to suffer fraud at the hands of employees and partners.
In fact, management fraud accounts for 46 per cent of cases, with a further 32 per cent linked to third party involvement.
"What we are essentially saying is that management are robbing you blind, suppliers are ripping you off left right and centre and regulators are breathing down your neck," commented Simon Bevan, head of BDO Stoy Hayward's fraud services team.
"The combination of spiralling personal debt and desperate employees spells real danger for business.
Especially when, sadly, our figures provide clear evidence that commercial organisations of all types and size throughout the UK are currently failing, in some cases quite spectacularly, to get to grips with the fraudulent activity of their staff."
