Tories pledge to support small suppliers and local businesses
Conservative leader David Cameron has pledged that a Tory government would do more to help small businesses and local suppliers.
Speaking at the Campaign to Protect Rural England, Mr Cameron said a Conservative government would, if elected, offer tax breaks to local businesses and remove red tape for firms competing against supermarkets.
Under the plans, the 'social value' of small businesses would be considered when policies were debated, rather than focusing solely on the economic arguments.
"The personal and specialised offer from independent retailers, combined with their tendency to be more involved in community activities, to be plugged into local social networks or to support local suppliers, means that they should be treated differently," Mr Cameron explained.
"If small independent shops have a greater social value than chains or larger shops, then it makes sense for them to benefit not only from retention and strengthening of the 'needs test' in planning law but also from an advantageous tax and regulatory regime which tips the balance back in their favour against the larger retailers."
Recently, the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) stepped up its campaign to protect local suppliers.
John Wright, the national chairman of the FSB, explained: "Our message is that shopping in local independent shops is good for the community, good for the environment and good for you."
