The changing face of the retail landscape
The shape of the retail market could change quite extensively over the next few years.
That is according to Talking Retail, which has suggested that these changes will occur as a result of emerging trends in consumer spending brought on by the looming recession.
David Shrimpton, managing editor of Talking Retail, explained that shoppers will be looking for more cost-effective ways to make purchases and cheaper products as their expendable incomes reduce.
As such, consumers who are currently shopping locally, via the internet or at discount stores could continue to do this for the foreseeable future.
Mr Shrimpton said: "The thing is, if consumers change their habits and they like what they find they tend to stick with habits."
He went on to say that supermarkets are facing increased competition from discount stores, which look set to attract more people "if recession comes over the hill".
Figures from the Office for National Statistics revealed that overall retail sales fell by 0.4 per cent between August and September.
