Tesco criticised over misleading planning application
Supermarket chain Tesco has run into trouble after being accused of using a small local retailer to 'front' its planning application for an 80,000 square foot store in Barnstaple.
According to the Telegraph, the application for the shop was submitted in the name of local retailer Brian Ford. This was despite the fact that the supermarket chain had acquired the land more than 12 months ago.
The plans reportedly make no mention of Tesco's involvement and make much of the small retailer.
However, the paper claims that "Tesco has always intended to build and operate the store itself if the application succeeded".
Rival retailers have criticised the move, even though it does not technically break any laws.
One told the paper: "This is a Trojan horse planning application. It has, effectively, been fronted by a local retailer. It is misleading."
However, a spokesperson from Tesco defended the process. She explained to the Telegraph: "Brian Ford's is a local family run company. They did not want to cause uncertainty to their staff until it was clear if these plans would progress. The motivation was not to conceal Tesco's identity it was to help them maintain stability in their business.
"As it got closer to a planning decision we insured that the planning authority was informed that they would not operate the store."
