Support for independent retailers encouraged
Local councillors and business leaders from Sheffield are encouraging consumers to support independent shops.
An appeal has been made in the run-up to Christmas in order to help boost sales for independents, some of which have suffered as a result of the economic downturn, the Sheffield Telegraph reports.
The appeal has asserted that these stores help to "make Sheffield distinctive" and as such deserve the help and support of local consumers.
Brendan Moffett, director of strategic marketing at Creative Sheffield, a redevelopment agency, stressed the importance of independents to the economy of the city.
He told the local newspaper: "It is up to everyone to ensure that Sheffield's independent retailers are supported – especially in the run-up to Christmas.
"The people of Sheffield need to recognise the importance of supporting independent businesses to maintain the city's distinctive image - which is pertinent to the development of Sheffield's economy."
An 'Independent's Day' was held in Sheffield last Saturday (December 6th) in support of local independent retailers.
