Suffolk market town to be transformed with new high street retail development
Plans to transform a small market town in Suffolk have been unveiled by the local council.
According to the Ipswich Evening Star, the Mid Suffolk District Council plan involves the compulsory purchase of 13 businesses and an old church to make space for the £10 million retail development in the town of Stowmarket.
While the move will see the business premises knocked down, council bosses have promised that the regeneration project will be of significant benefit to independent retailers in the town.
Dave Benham, a regeneration and community services officer with the authority, explained to the paper: "This is positive for Stowmarket. The town has become dormant and the centre is not fit for purpose. The only way the town will become fit for purpose will be if we undertake a fundamental redevelopment."
Tim Passmore, the Conservative leader of Mid Suffolk District Council, added that the compulsory purchases were deemed necessary to prevent any delays in the project.
"In a difficult economic time we are pressing ahead with this, it has to be sorted out. We want to get on with it and are delighted with the reaction from businesses and the public," he said.
