Small retailers face taxation worries
Independent retailers have been urged to take a more active role in their taxes.
The Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) has revealed that the onus is on small retailers, wholesalers and other self-employed people to handle their own tax affairs and urged them to react accordingly.
John Whiting, chairman of the CIOT's Management of Taxes Sub-Committee, claimed that those unsure of their tax situation should seek the help of an adviser.
He said: "Plenty of self-employed people will grumble that they are in the tax business, not the business they set out to do, and that's why they get an adviser.
"It's far easier for them [the self-employed] to make mistakes, and far easier to get it wrong. When you are self-employed, you are not only supporting yourself and your loved ones, you are also supporting the tax man. It's not easy," Mr Whiting added
