Small retailers exporting overseas via eBay

Small online retailers are leveraging the internet and services such as eBay to exploit the weak pound and export more goods overseas.

According to new research from the online auction house, more than £293 million of merchandise was exported from the UK through its site over the past 12 months.

The most popular goods being shipped abroad by small retailers were men's and women's designer clothing and designer footwear, with consumers in France and Italy particularly keen to take advantage of the pound/euro exchange rate.

Vanessa Canzini, a spokesperson for eBay, said: "Online retailers are making the most of exports and making a killing. Whilst the weak pound has meant that the cost of supplies has gone up they are doing really well exporting abroad."

She added that independent online retailers in the survey have an average of eight employees and typically enjoy a turnover in the region of £240,000.

The research also indicated that 35 per cent of online retailers are altering their stock in response to the current economic landscape, even though 69 per cent met their sales targets for the first quarter of the year.
