Shrewsbury – truly independent

Shrewsbury boasts the largest quantity of independent retailers in the UK, with over 600 in total.

The protection of these small businesses is high on the agenda for a number of people wishing to protect their local area's character at a time when even the largest of high street stores are struggling.

An impassioned display in a Birmingham Post blog captured such sentiment perfectly.

The writer said it was too easy to dismiss the smaller, independent stores when the big chains are turning over profits in the billions.

They said: "The likes of Woolworths get all the attention, as might be expected given the number of people who lost their jobs [whereas] the loss of a small store might only mean one or two people looking for new employment.

"But in terms of the environment and character of our urban surroundings, the loss of the small shop can be a lot more damaging."

Back in March RETAILERS UNITED, a network for retailers in Shrewsbury, set up Allthelittleshops.co.uk, an online "super-market" consisting of a collection of goods from each of the towns small shops.
