Shop price inflation rises
The prices of goods in shops rose slightly in the month of January, new research has revealed.
BRC-Neilsen's Shop Price Index revealed that prices in shops were 1.2 per cent higher year-on-year, up from the one per cent increase for December 2007.
The rise in retail rates was attributed to the end of the Christmas period where a number of goods were heavily discounted.
However, when compared to the figures for December 2007, prices in shops fell by 0.5 per cent, the first decrease in six months.
The news could be the result of an increase in prices for wholesalers, with a rise in the cost of foodstuffs or the cost of energy being passed onto shops.
Meanwhile, cashback site Quidco enjoyed a profitable Christmas period, passing £2.7 million of rewards back to its customers.
Paul Nikkel, the manager of the firm, claimed that the success of online sales might soon see the internet overtake the high street for retail figures.
