Sheffield authorities donate fake goods to overseas charity
Trading Standards officers from Sheffield are set to donate several tonnes of fake clothing to people living in less economically-developed countries.
The Sheffield Telegraph reported that officers from the city had filled a 17-tonne truck with seized counterfeit shoes, jewellery and clothing and that the items would now be donated overseas.
Before the items are shipped overseas, all the fake labels will be removed.
Phil Glaves of Sheffield Trading Standards explained to the paper that the counterfeit goods had been seized from local warehouses, factories and homes in recent years.
He added: "It would have been sold at car boot sales, on eBay and in local pubs. It's good to see it being put to good use."
Councillor Shaffaq Hussain said that the authorities had realised that it would not have been very green to dispose of the fake goods in the usual manner.
"It would be wasteful to dispose of these illegal goods through landfill or incineration," he told the paper. "This charity has distribution links to ensure the goods get to people who need them and will appreciate them."
Recently, it was revealed that authorities in Manchester were stepping up their fight against counterfeiters.
The Manchester Evening News reported that officials were increasing the number of raids on suspected retailers of fake goods.
