Sainsbury's to increase non-food retail
Sainsbury's is set to add a number of new items to its non-food range providing increased competition to small local retailers.
Eager to increase its share of the marketplace, the company is poised to concentrate its efforts on products not traditionally found in its stores, the Times reports.
Justin King, the chief executive of Sainsbury's, claimed that the chain's new focus would help it provide new goods to existing consumers.
"My starting point on this is that we already have 17 million people doing us the great honour of shopping with us every week so we have the opportunity to sell them something beyond what was on their shopping list when they come in," he said.
Meanwhile, smaller retailers hoping to hold their own against Sainsbury's and its expanding range of products could benefit form a targeted approach.
According to the British Retail Consortium, smaller businesses can maintain their success before finding their target audience and pitching directly to them.
