Rogue eBay trader fined £500k and jailed for one year

A man from who was caught selling counterfeit Nike trainers via online auction site eBay has been given a huge fine and a prison sentence.

Mark McLintock has been fined £500,000 and ordered to spend one year in jail by Paisley Sheriff Court, the Paisley Daily Express reported.

Trading under the name "Absolut Angel", Mr McLintock sold copies of Nike trainers usually priced at £120 but which he sold for just £15 a pair.

However, his illegal behaviour was discovered by a team of trading standards officers in 2006.

The trainers were thought to have been made in China and were of “exceptionally good quality”, complete with the Nike 'swoosh', noted the local paper.

Commenting on the case, Richard Ambrose, head of trust and safety for eBay UK, said: "We will continue to do everything we can to tackle counterfeits on our site and working closely with law enforcement agencies like the police and trading standards is a vital part of this fight."
