Retailers welcome Edinburgh redevelopment approval
Local traders have welcomed the news that Edinburgh City Council has given its backing to a new redevelopment scheme in the area.
Earlier this week, the council said that it was supporting the major redevelopment of the city's Old Town, known as the Caltongate scheme.
Under the plans, retail, offices and residential properties will be built alongside a new five-star hotel and conference centre.
Now, local retailers have revealed that they are pleased that the plan seems to be going ahead.
Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce said that the plan would increase the reputation of the city and help small businesses.
Deputy chief executive of the chamber, Graham Birse, said: "This has been a long haul - but at last ministers have endorsed the sensible decision taken by Edinburgh councillors to re-vitalise a run-down area of the Old Town with a quality development that will bring with it jobs and prosperity to Edinburgh city centre."
The developers of the project have promised that the site will offer a variety of spaces for retailers.
A statement explained: "The wide range of units available, from 600 square feet to 20,000 square feet, has been conceived to add diversity to the area, and appeal to local as well as national and international traders."
