Retailers urged to curb discounting
Retailers have been warned to think carefully before setting up promotions and selling goods at heavily reduced prices.
According to the KPMG/SPSL Retail Think Tank, an increase in cut-price sales in the current climate could lead to several stores going bust - harming retailers, wholesalers and consumers.
Richard Hyman, from Verdict Consulting, revealed that the rise in the expense of retailing has made sales riskier than before.
"2008 will be yet another year when rises in retailers' costs will outstrip growth in their sales," he said
"Following years of cost cutting, most of the low hanging fruit from this source has already been picked. Driving top lines will increasingly determine retailers' fortunes going forward," Mr Hyman added.
The group urged retailers to begin using sales as a means of clearing stock, rather than as a reaction to the position of similar retailers.
