Retailers see April increase in shoppers
The number of consumers visiting retailers increased during April, a new report has shown.
Figures from this month's Experian Retail Footfall Index has revealed a 0.9 per cent increase in shopper numbers for April in comparison with May. The figures mark the first increase in footfall for nine months.
Jonathan de Mello, Experian's director of retail consultancy, claimed that good weather during May could help see a second successive increase in store visitors.
"The retail sector will take some comfort in the overall upturn in visitor numbers," he said.
"It is hoped that after April's snow fall, some welcome May sunshine will inspire shoppers to purchase new summer clothing ranges - as well as outdoor leisure items such as barbecues, DIY and gardening accessories.
"With April showing some signs of shopper confidence stabilising, the retail winners will be those who do most to convince the shopper to purchase," Mr de Mello added.
The index also revealed that the footfall figures for April were a 0.1 per cent improvement on the number of shoppers for the same month of 2007.
