Retailers rejoice as Tesco planning application is rejected
Local retailers in Northern Ireland are claiming victory after plans to build a 130,000 square foot Tesco in the area were rejected.
It was reported that Planning Service had rejected Tesco's application to build what would have been the largest of its supermarkets on the island close to the town of Banbridge.
Banbridge Traders Association spokesman Joe Quail explained to the BBC that the reject would be "welcomed not just by traders but by many in the local community".
He added: "If this application had been successful then our town would have been ruined with the loss of hundreds of jobs and the closure of many local independent retailers in the town centre who would have been unable to compete with such a vast store."
Glyn Roberts, chief executive of the Northern Ireland Independent Retail Trade Association, told the broadcaster that the decision was a "victory for common sense".
Mr Roberts said that there was still work to be done to protect small retailers in the area from the supermarkets.
"The multiples have applications pending in Crumlin, Ballyclare and Larne which could cause significant damage to independent retailers in those towns," he concluded.
